Flatland Projects is committed to supporting artists to realise new work. This opportunity to exhibit as part of our programme of exhibitions in Bexhill-on-Sea is part of our long-term commitment to making the systems that art galleries use in choosing who forms apart of their public exhibitions programmes visible. As a regional arts organisation in East Sussex we want to broaden our reach to meet and work with an artist who we haven’t worked with before. This opportunity is for artists to develop and take a risk in exhibiting existing or new work and to reach new audiences that are outside of the UK’s major cities.
We know that Open Call opportunities are time consuming and often incredibly difficult for artists to navigate, but we also know that participating in exhibitions that include a fee and production budget are also hard to access when you haven’t had an opportunity before. This prize is therefore conceived in response to this sector-wide issue.

An artist who has never had a solo exhibition*

We actively encourage applications from artists who are who identify as Black, Asian or minority ethnic, disabled, LGBTQIA+, or living in areas of socioeconomic deprivation.
* This opportunity is for artists who have never had a publicly funded or commercial gallery solo exhibition of their artwork. We will still welcome applications from artists who have participated in solo exhibitions that have been self funded or have been hosted by an organisation whom doesn't receive regular funding or isn't a commercial gallery.
How do I apply?
Applications can be made by completing the process detailed on our website:

A short application form (2 x 300-word questions).

A monitoring information form.

Uploading images of or providing links of up to five artworks.
We will use this information to formulate a shortlist of 5 artists, we will pay these 5 artists half a days’ pay of £75 to meet with us over Zoom for a 45-minute conversation about their application in early March 2024.
How will the shortlist be decided?
The selection panel will be made up of Flatland Projects Director, Flatland’s Young Person’s Studio Lead, and 2 artists who have worked with Flatland before.
The panel will consider 3 practical questions in their decision making:

Will the work of this artist challenge and engage our regional audiences?

Can the artist produce a show ready for August 2024 in this time frame?

Can we support the type of work that the artist is proposing? (For example our space is incredibly light so film projection is very difficult and costly for us to work with).
