Flatland Projects X Talent Accelerator

Art Technicians Introduction Course 2023

15th - 18th August 2023

Flatland Projects' and Talent Accelerator Introduction to Being an Art Technician course is an opportunity for 6 x 18-25 year olds from or living in East Sussex to learn the ins-and-outs of working in an art gallery. Participants will learn an insight into building walls and plinths, preparing for exhibitions, and hanging / installing art works.

A big problem for many artists is how to manage supporting their artistic practice through work and remaining connected to the industry. One way of approaching this is to work part-time as a technician in art galleries or as an artist's assistant. This course, led by two experienced technicians working locally and in London, will give an insight into the types of work that goes on in an art gallery behind the scenes.

The course will be four short days during which time participants will install a small exhibition at Flatland Projects. We'll be building a studio display wall, fabricating small plinths for sculptures, painting the space, looking at the many types of fixings and methods for hanging artworks, and then installing the show.

If you've no experience of using the tools involved that's fine, we'll be demonstrating how to do each aspect of the build with careful instruction before you get hands on. All tools and protective gear will be provided.
